Son Yeon-jae ( 손 연재 ; born May 28, 1994 in Seoul ) is a former South Korean rhythmic gymnast . She took part in the Summer Olympics in 2012 and 2016 . From 2013 to 2016 it was ranked 5th in the world .

Career

Son became known in South Korea after she won the bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou ( China ) . Then Son went to Russia to train there. Two years later she took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and reached 5th place in the individual .

At the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan she won the silver medal with the ball and bronze at the 2014 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Izmir with the hoop. At the 2015 Summer Universiade in her home country, Son won five medals, three gold and two silver.

In 2016, Son took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and ultimately took fourth place in the individual rhythmic gymnastics with 72,898 points.

After the Games, Son decided to continue her studies at Yonsei University . According to a poll by Gallup Korea , Son was the South Korean top athlete of the year at the end of the year with 29.8%. On February 18, 2017, Son announced her retirement.
