The Marie-Schlei-Verein is a non - profit, non - governmental organization founded in 1984 and based in Hamburg. The association is committed to gender equality , the empowerment of women and sustainable development . The organization was founded in memory of Development Minister Marie Schlei . In 1994 the association received the Friedrich Ebert Foundation's human rights award .

History and projects

In accordance with the objective set out in the statutes of supporting poor women around the world, the association has sponsored around 650 women self-help projects in various developing countries since 1984. The annual reports have been published online since 2005. Most projects reach women on site and combine educational measures with earning opportunities in order to build an independent life. In 2018 alone, 2,100 women were put into work. In addition to providing direct support to women in need all over the world, the association is also active in Germany to provide information about the living conditions of women worldwide. He cooperates with non-governmental organizations with similar goals in order to advance his concerns politically.

The managing director of the association is Kirsten vom Heu. The association is a member of the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid and the German Women's Council . The various bodies such as the general assembly, board of directors and board of trustees are supported by regional groups that raise awareness of the goals of the association and conduct educational work.
