García Fernández († 995 ) was Count of Castile and Álava .

Life

García was the son of Fernán González , Count of Castile and Sancha Sanchéz, a daughter of the Navarre King Sancho I. Garcés . He succeeded his father in 970 as Count of Castile and Álava.

At the beginning of his reign he pursued a balancing policy towards the Caliphate of Córdoba , but allied himself in 974 with the kings of León and Navarre and the Beni Gómez . He attacked Deza and besieged the fortress of Gormaz , but was defeated by the Muslim general Ghalib. Most of his acquisitions were recaptured by Almansor after 977 . In 991 there was an uprising of his son Sancho , as well as a rebellion of the nobility after the marriage of his daughter Elvira to Bermudo II of León. In 974 García issued the Fuero deCastrojeriz and founded the Infantado von Covarrubias in 978 to care for his daughter Urraca. In 995 he was wounded in a skirmish and was taken prisoner, where he died after a short time. He was buried in the Iglesia de los Tres Santos in Córdoba , later he was transferred to the Castilian monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña near Burgos .
