Sancho García (* around 965; † February 5, 1017 ) was Count of Castile from 995 to 1017 .

Life

Sancho was the son of García Fernández , Count of Castile and Ava of Ribagorza, daughter of Raimundo II, Count of Ribagorza . He followed in 995 after the death of his father as Count of Castile. At the beginning of his tenure there was peace with the Caliphate of Cordoba , but Sancho was defeated by Almansor 1000 at the Battle of Cervera . After Almansor's death in 1002, the caliphate was marked by constant battles for rule, which allowed Sancho to intervene in the struggle for Córdoba in 1009 alongside the Berbers who supported Sulaiman al-Mustain . Sancho managed to stabilize the border in the south along the Duero . Sancho reorganized Castile, issued city rights ( Fueros ) and founded the monastery of San Salvador de Oña in 1011, where he was buried after his death in 1017. His son García followed him as Count of Castile.
