Munia Mayor (* 990/5; † after June 13, 1066 ) was Countess of Castile and Queen of Navarre .

Life

Munia was the eldest daughter of Sancho García , Count of Castile and his wife Urraca. She married Sancho III. the great , King of Navarre. In 1024 she took the name Mayor . After the murder of her brother García Sánchez , the Count of Castile, she followed in 1029 in Castile. Her husband Sancho occupied the county of Castile and the neighboring areas around Cea and Pisuerga in León . After Sancho's death, his property was divided and the eldest illegitimate son, Ramiro , became king of Aragon . From Munia's surviving sons, García Navarra , Ferdinand Castile , who became the kingdom, and Gonzalo the newly created kingdom of Sobrarbe-Ribagorza. After the death of her husband, Munia retired to the monastery. She was last mentioned on June 13, 1066 in a document in which she wanted a burial in the monastery of San Martín de Frómista , which she founded .
