Konstantin August Wilhelm von Witzleben (born October 31, 1784 in Halberstadt , † April 7, 1845 in Glatz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of the Glatz Fortress .

Life

origin

He comes from the Thuringian noble family Witzleben . His parents were the Prussian major general Heinrich Günther von Witzleben and his wife Amalie Caroline Luise Wilhelmine, born Freiin von Wulff from the Füchteln family. His brother Karl Ernst Job Wilhelm von Witzleben became Prussian Minister of War.

Military career

Witzleben came on 3 October 1797, Corporal Corporal in the Infantry Regiment of the Crown Prince. There he was promoted to second lieutenant until February 1803 . In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battle of Auerstedt , the battle near Nordhausen and took part in the surrender near Prenzlau. Then he was put inactive.

After the war, Witzleben was employed in the Guard regiment on February 15, 1809 . There he was on August 9, 1811, Premier Lieutenant and on March 18, 1812, Captain and Commander of the Life Guard. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , he rose to captain on June 12, 1813 . During the war he was wounded in the Battle of Großbeeren and awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Witzleben later fought at Ligny and received the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Order of Saint Anne 2nd Class for Belle Alliance . He also took part in the sieges of Maulbuge, Philippeville and the blockade of Charleville. On May 8, 1815, he was transferred to the 25th Infantry Regiment as a major . On November 6, 1816 he was appointed commander of the Guards Rifle Battalion and was then commissioned to set up the 36th Infantry Regiment in Luxembourg . From August 27, 1818 Witzleben was in command of the Emperor Franz Grenadier Regiment .

On June 18, 1825, he received the service cross . On March 30, 1827, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel with a patent from April 17, 1827, and Witzleben also acted as a member of the commission for the revision of military laws. For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle III on January 18, 1829 . And became a colonel on March 30, 1830 . On November 26, 1834, he was awarded the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus II. Class. On March 30, 1836, he was appointed commander of the 9th Landwehr Brigade and on April 5, 1836, he was aggregated to the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment . On March 30, 1838, he was promoted to major general. On July 9, 1839 Witzleben was appointed director of the division school of the 9th Division and in this capacity was also chairman of the examination committee for ensigns. On September 12, 1841, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, and was also appointed Senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class. On October 3, 1844 he was appointed commander of the Glatz Fortress and on March 22, 1845 promoted to lieutenant general. But he died there on April 7, 1845.

Witzleben married on August 1, 1811 on Marquardt Johanna Rudolfine Luitgarde von Bischoffwerder (* August 1, 1794 - February 10, 1869), a daughter of General Hans Rudolf von Bischoffwerder . The couple had several children:
