The SunPower Corp. is a listed US company that manufactures solar cells , plans, installs and operates photovoltaic systems .

SunPower was founded in 1985 in Silicon Valley by Richard Swanson for the commercial use of his technology, which he developed together with his students as a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University . SunPower produces monocrystalline , rear-contacted solar cells with a module efficiency of up to 22.8%.

history

In 2001, a solar airplane named Helios was built together with NASA , the wings of which consisted mainly of black solar modules .

In May 2002, the semiconductor specialist Cypress invested 8.8 million US dollars and thus acquired the majority of the company, in whose development it was instrumental.

In 2005, the company built the solar park Bavaria, which was then the largest photovoltaic open-space system in the world. SunPower also operates the facility.

On January 10, 2007, SunPower took over the company PowerLight Corporation , until then one of the market leaders in the planning and development of turnkey solar power plants.

2010 SunPower had a balance sheet total of more than 900 million dollars, with more than 1,500 dealers in eight countries and 5150 employees.

As of January 2, 2011, SunPower had approximately 5,150 employees worldwide. Including around 700 employees in the USA, 4,130 in the Philippines and 320 employees in other countries. Of these, around 3,850 work in manufacturing, 190 in creating and implementing projects, 210 in research and development, 580 in marketing and 320 in administration.

On August 5th, 2011 it was announced that SunPower will be the new main and shirt sponsor of Bayer 04 Leverkusen . The contract was terminated prematurely at the end of the 2012/13 season.

The share has been listed in the Photovoltaik Global 30 Index since 2009 .

In April 2011, 60% of the Sunpower shares were acquired by the French oil company Total for approx. 960 million euros .

Locations

Research and development are still carried out in San José, California .

Cell production in the Philippines outside of Manila and in Malaysia:

  • Fab 1 in Laguna Techno Park (closed in 2011 and all employees dismissed or moved to Fab 2, 50 km away)
  • Fab 2 in Batangas City (closed in 2016 and all employees dismissed or moved to Fab 4 50 km away)
  • Fab 3 in Melakka / Malaysia
  • Fab 4 in the Laguna Techno Park (same location as the former Fab 1)

The module production takes place in Mexicali (Mexico) and Porcelette (France).

For a long time there was only one pilot production in the Cypress Semiconductor halls in Round Rock, Texas .
