The main Cañadas Reales in Spain

As Cañadas Real (plural, Spanish: cañada = "reeds" real = "Royal") are those traditional kastellanischen cattle drive lines designated by the Royal decree of Alfons the ways were regulated in 1273rd The Cañadas reales (cattle grazing in the Meseta ) have been on a UNESCO list since 2007 , which is to be regarded as a preliminary stage of a future candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage .

history

Since time immemorial, certain cattle drift routes have been used continuously as part of transhumance (long-distance grazing with seasonal changes in pasture areas). The decree of Alfonso X pursued the regulation, order and protection of certain paths which, because of their importance, use or location, deserved to be protected from possible abuse. In this way, the Cañadas reales remained codified along with the creation of the Honrado Concejo de la Mesta ("Honorable Council of Mesta").

A Cañada real had to have a width of 90  cubits ( Varas castellanas ) (= 72.22 m) and was characterized by its very long distances (more than 500 km) with a course mainly from south to north (summer pasture) or north to south (Winter pasture) taking into account the geographical limitations. With the royal regulation, the reduction was also prohibited, which the owners of the adjacent fincas usually made by relocating the boundary stones / waymarks ( mojón / mojones ).

The Cañadas reales today

Although most of the Cañadas are in rural surroundings and have retained their original course, nowhere do they have the latitude decreed in 1273. Many Cañadas reales cross or pass small settlements, in some cases houses have been built on the paths. Where the Cañadas have been preserved, they run when crossing settlements on asphalt roads.

The decline in livestock farming on the one hand and the use of fodder on the other (which made changing pastures superfluous) meant that the cañadas were rarely used for grazing. Today the cañadas are used more for hiking and cycling than for driving cattle.

Cañada Real Galiana

The Cañada Real Galiana describes the route between La Rioja and Ciudad Real . The largest slum in Europe is located on this strip ; it has about 30-40,000 inhabitants and is officially an illegal settlement. Many people live there because they can no longer pay the installments for their apartments due to personal or general economic crises.
