(27952) Atapuerca is a major belt asteroid of the Vesta family . Atapuerca was discovered in 1997 by the astronomers Ángel López Jiménez and Rafael Pacheco at the Astronomical Observatory Mallorca . The asteroid was named after the Sierra de Atapuerca , a mountain range in the Spanish province of Burgos , where the oldest human fossils in Europe were discovered.
