The Planetarium Mallorca is located in Costitx on the Balearic -Insel Mallorca . It is operated by the Mallorcan Astronomical Organization (OAM), which, in addition to this planetarium, also operates the easternmost observatory in Spain (Observatorio Astronomico de Mallorca).

particularities

The observatory, inaugurated in May 1991 , is the only astronomical center in the Balearic Islands . The funding by the Balearic Government (Department of Culture, Education and Sport), the Sparkasse La Caixa , the Costitx city administration and the OAM had two goals: On the one hand, the promotion of research within the framework of the GEA (Association for the Study of Astrophysics) and the guidelines of the Canarian observatory and, on the other hand, familiarization with astronomy for schoolchildren, students and other interested people. The observatory is also used for scientific work: Some new asteroids could be discovered here, something that has not happened in Spain since 1941 .

A planetarium was built next to the observatory, surmounted by a 14-meter metal dome, in which the technically highly developed Zeiss ZKP3 Skymaster planetarium projector is located. This device can project six thousand stars with the highest accuracy , which corresponds to the view of the stars under the open sky from any point on earth . The central main projector is coupled with a further 30 additional projectors as well as video and panorama projectors, which are located in a circular room with seating for 110 people. A Digistar system has also been in operation since 2009 . B. is also used in the media dome of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences .

The Mallorcan planetarium is the only one in Europe that can project images from telescopes in real time , which can either be located in the connected observatory or in distant places, and can be remotely controlled via the Internet . This is possible using software specially developed by OAM .

The installations are equipped with an astromedia room where exhibitions are organized. An interesting selection of meteorites can currently be seen there. The largest are up to 60 kilograms. The visitor to the planetarium also gets a glimpse of the adjoining observatory, which houses an impressive hall with ten portable telescopes.
