Location of the municipality | ||
Monreal , Elo in Basque , is a place on the Camino de Santiago in the Spanish-speaking part of the autonomous community of Navarre in Spain . It is located 18 km southwest of Pamplona .
Despite its small size, there was a Jewish quarter here in the Middle Ages . At times the village was so important that it issued its own coin. There was a castle that served as a hunting residence for the Navarre kings. However, only remnants of this still exist. Its destruction (1521), like that of other Navarre defenses, was ordered by the Spanish kings in the 16th century.
Today you can visit the church of St. Martin , which, of Gothic origin, was heavily modified in the 18th century. The retable dates from the 17th century and was restored in 1927.
The image of the church can be found partly as a station in the goose game , a board game popular in Spain with most of the main pilgrimage stations of the Way of St. James, as can be found in the Liber Sancti Jacobi .
Monreal has a pilgrims' hostel.
