Krishnanagar ( Bengali : কৃষ্ণনগর , Kṛṣṇanagar ; also Krishnagar for short ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with almost 160,000 inhabitants (metropolitan area approx. 185,000 inhabitants). It is the administrative seat of the Nadia district .

Krishnanagar is about 110 km (driving distance) north of Kolkata on the south bank of the Jalangi River at an average altitude of 14 m above sea level. d. M. Nearby cities are Nabadwip (approx. 18 km west) and Mayapur (approx. 20 km northwest).

The majority Hindi- speaking population consists of almost 91% Hindus , approx. 6% Muslims and approx. 3% Christians ; Jains , Sikhs , Buddhists, and others are numerically small minorities. As is common in censuses in northern India, the male population is about 5% higher than the female population.
economy
The main crops in the area include rice , jute and sugar cane as well as mangoes ; Livestock breeding (cattle, poultry) is also playing an increasingly important role. The manufacture of painted clay figures and confectionery are also important. The city is the seat of numerous administrative and educational institutions as well as hospitals, banks, etc.
history
For centuries Krishnanagar was nothing more than a larger village. It developed only slowly - especially under the British and after the independence and division of India - into a trading center and transport hub. Krishnanagar has been a city since 1864.
Attractions
- The most important building in the city is the palace of Raja Krishnachandra ( Rajbari Palace ), built at the end of the 19th century , in whose inner courtyard there is a much-visited Durga temple.
- Another building from this period is the Collegiate School , built in the English colonial style .
