Benedict John Osta

Benedict John Osta SJ (born August 15, 1931 in Blasurahi , † January 30, 2014 in Patna ) was Archbishop of Patna .

Life

Benedict John Osta joined the order of the Jesuits on July 20, 1950 and was ordained a priest on June 9, 1963 after studying theology and philosophy at the University of Chicago . He was, among other things, novice master of his order (1969-1976) and vicar general in Patna (1976-1980).

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Patna on March 6, 1980. The Archbishop of Calcutta , Lawrence Trevor Cardinal Picachy SJ, donated him episcopal ordination on June 21 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Pius Kerketta SJ, Archbishop of Ranchi and Augustine Francis Wildermuth , Former Bishop of Patna.

With the elevation to the archbishopric on March 16, 1999 he was appointed Archbishop of Patna by John Paul II. On October 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Osta was an honorary member of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India CBCI .
