Roman Catholic Church in Jordan
The Roman Catholic Church in Jordan is a Christian minority in the predominantly Islamic country.
The only Melkite diocese in the country is the Petra and Philadelphia Archepark . In addition there is the Latin Vicariate in Amman , which is subordinate to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem . Over 50,000 Catholics live in Jordan. It is legal to build Catholic churches in Jordan . However, conversion from Islam to Catholicism is prohibited. Pope Benedict XVI visited Jordan in 2009 . He described Islam as a "force for good"; his visit was received mostly positively.
