Georg Zur
Georg Zur , also Giorgio Zur , (born February 15, 1930 in Görlitz , Germany ; † January 8, 2019 in Rome ) was a German Roman Catholic Archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
The son of a master tailor studied in Rome at the Gregoriana , where he completed his licensing studies in philosophy and theology and received his doctorate in canon law . Georg Zur was ordained a priest on October 10, 1955 . After pastoral work as a chaplain in the Archdiocese of Bamberg , he graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in 1961/62 and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See with assignments in the nunciatures in India , Mexico , Burundi and Uganda .
Pope John Paul II appointed him on February 5, 1979 Titular Archbishop of Sesta and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio for Malawi and Zambia . The episcopal ordination received to February 24 of the same year by the then Secretary of State Cardinal Jean-Marie Villot . Co- consecrators were the later Cardinal and Cardinal Secretary of State, Agostino Casaroli , and the Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy .
On May 3rd, 1985 Georg Zur was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Paraguay . He held this office until August 13, 1990, when Pope John Paul II appointed him Pro-Nuncio for India and Nepal . Pope John Paul II appointed him President of the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in the Vatican from 1999 to 2000 . In 2000 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the Russian Federation in Moscow and in 2002 as Nuncio in Austria in Vienna . He retired when he reached the age limit in 2005 and has lived in Rome ever since.
