Donato Squicciarini
Donato Squicciarini (born April 24, 1927 in Altamura , Italy , † March 5, 2006 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Squicciarini received in 1952 in the Apulian town of Altamura, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He studied in Rome , where he received his doctorate in Catholic theology and law . In 1958 he became a diplomat of the Holy See and worked from 1958 in Panama , from 1960 in Colombia , since 1961 under Nuncio Corrado Bafile in Germany and since 1966 in Turkey , where he visited Pope Paul VI. organized. From 1967 he worked in the Papal State Secretariat and worked from 1975 to 1978 under Nuncio Opilio Rossi as Nunciature Councilor in Vienna .
Pope John Paul I appointed him titular Archbishop of Tiburnia and Apostolic Nuncio in Burundi on August 31, 1978 . Squicciarini chose as motto Veritas et Caritas ( "Truth and Love") and received on 26 November 1978 in Altamura by Cardinal Franz König , the episcopal ordination . Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giuseppe Caprio and the prelate of Altamura-Acquaviva delle Fonti , Salvatore Isgró .
From 1981 to 1989 he was Pro-Nuncio in Cameroon , Gabon and Equatorial Guinea . From July 1, 1989 to 2002, he was Nuncio in Austria . During this time there were allegations of sexual abuse of young people against the then Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groër , the 1995 church people's request and the appointments of the bishops Kurt Krenn in 1991 in St. Pölten , Paul Iby in 1993 in Eisenstadt , Christoph Schönborn in 1995 in Vienna , Alois Kothgasser 1997 in Innsbruck and Alois Schwarz 2001 in Klagenfurt . From 1990 to 1994 he was also permanent representative of the Holy See to international organizations in Vienna .
Archbishop Squicciarini was accepted into the Order of Malta as Grand Cross Conventual Chaplain in Vienna in 1997 and belonged to the Grand Priory of Naples and Sicily. He was an honorary member of the Catholic student associations KAV Danubia Vienna-Korneuburg in the ÖCV and the KAV Capitolina Rome in the CV .
