Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy
Duraisamy Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy ( Tamil துரைசாமி சைமன் லூர்துசாமி ; born February 5, 1924 in the village of Kalleri, Tamil Nadu , India ; † June 2, 2014 in Rome ) was an Indian Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was the fourth cardinal to come from India and the first Curia cardinal to come from Asia.
Life
Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy studied after graduating from school in Tindivanam philosophy at the diocesan seminary in Pondicherry (from 1939) and theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Seminary of St. Peter in Bangalore (1946-1951). He received on 21 December 1951 Auguste-Siméon Colas MEP, the Archbishop of Pondicherry , the ordination . After various activities in the ordinariate and pastoral care, he completed postgraduate studies at Loyola College in Madras . At the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, he completed a doctorate in canon law (1953-1956). In the Diocese of Pondicherry he was Chancellor and Secretary to the Archbishop. He was the editor of the Catholic weekly newspaper "Sarva Viabi" in the Tamil language.
Already at the age of 38 years Lourdusamy was from Pope John XXIII. appointed titular bishop of Sozusa in Libya and entrusted with the role of auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Bangalore . The episcopal ordination received his August 22, 1962, the Archbishop Ambrose Rayappan . Co- consecrators were Rajarethinam Arokiasamy Sundaram , Bishop of Tanjore , and Daniel Paul Arulswamy , Bishop of Kumbakonam . He was the council father of the Second Vatican Council and participant in the second, third and fourth sessions.
On November 9, 1964, Pope Paul VI. the installation as coadjutor archbishop of Bangalore and the appointment as titular archbishop of Philippi . With Thomas Pothacamury's resignation on January 11, 1968, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Bangalore.
In the early 1970s, Pope Paul VI called. Lourdusamy, together with Archbishop Bernardin Gantin , who came from Benin , to the Roman Curia and commissioned the two clergy to lead the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . On February 26, 1973, he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In addition, he was appointed Vice Chancellor at the Pontifical Urban University.
In the solemn consistory of May 25, 1985 Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titular church of Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci fuori Porta Cavalleggeri in the college of cardinals . On October 30, 1985, the Indian prelate was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . In this capacity Lourdusamy was responsible for Rome's relationship with the Eastern Catholic Churches until May 24, 1991 . On April 5, 1993 he was appointed cardinal protodeacon , the longest serving cardinal deacon. On January 29, 1996, he was appointed cardinal priest .
He was a member of the Apostolic Signature , the supreme court of the Roman Curia, and a member of the Pontifical Council for the Legal Texts . He was also a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Pontifical Committee for World Eucharistic Congresses, as well as the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Pontifical Council for the Family . He was the Apostolic Delegate appointed by Pope John Paul II to the funeral of Mother Teresa in 1997.
Cardinal Lourdusamy recently lived secluded in his Roman apartment not far from St. Peter's Basilica and only appeared occasionally at major church events. Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy died on June 2, 2014 at the age of 90 in Rome. He was buried in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Pondicherry. More than 2000 people attended the funeral.
