Josef Kohlhäufl

Josef Kohlhäufl (born March 23, 1936 in Oberwalting ) is a German church musician .

Live and act

Kohlhäufl grew up in the Oberwalting district of the Leiblfing community and from 1956 studied Catholic church music at the Regensburg church music school . From 1958 he worked for the Regensburger Domspatzen as choirmaster and Magister Choralis. In 1960 he obtained a baccalaureate at the Pontifical Institute for Church Music in Rome. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the church music department of the diocese of Regensburg as diocesan music director . In 1990 he became professor for Gregorian chant and liturgy at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. He taught there until his retirement in 2004. In 1984, Josef Kohlhäufl took over the post of collegiate conductor at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Old Chapel in Regensburg, where he was appointed honorary conductor in 2011 after retiring. He directed u. a. the Choralschola and the male choir of former Regensburger Domspatzen, the Weltenburger Musikgemeinschaft, the Regensburg vocal soloists and the Regensburg motet choir .

In 2006, Josef Kohlhäufl played a key role in initiating the “ Pope Benedict Organ ” project in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Old Chapel in Regensburg.

Kohlhäufl is a member of the working group melody restitution of AISCGre who tried to on the basis of the oldest choral manuscripts the original melodies of Gregorian chant restitution .

Awards

Josef Kohlhäufl was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services to Catholic church music . In 1997 he received the Albertus Magnus Medal for Art and Science from the City of Regensburg and the Orlando di Lasso Medal from the General Cäcilien Association . In 2008 he was appointed Episcopal Church Music Director.
