Menzingen is a municipality in the canton of Zug in Switzerland . It was created in its current form in 1848, when the "community on the mountain" - as it was usually called at the time - was separated from the Neuheim community .

geography

Menzingen is located in the hilly landscape in the northeastern part of the canton of Zug and borders the canton of Zurich . The community consists of the three localities Edlibach , Finstersee and Menzingen.

Since 2002 Menzingen has been the seat of the Menzingen Cantonal School (KSM). The General House of the Society of St. Pius X and the Institute of the Sisters of the Holy Cross (Menzinger Sisters) are located in Menzingen.

history

Menzingen is first mentioned in a document as Mentzenheim in the Liber Heremi around 1060 , when Count Ulrich von Kiburg handed over a hat to the Einsiedeln monastery during the term of office of Abbot Hermann (1051-1065). According to Professor Paul Kläui, this place name will probably be a spelling mistake, because the well-known copy by Aegidius Tschudi includes the comment "forte Mentzingen - Zugerbiet" (perhaps Menzingen im Zugerbiet).

It was first mentioned in a document as «Mêincingin» in 1217/22. During the same period, other first mentions of place names in the municipality, seven between 1200 and 1250 and another six between 1250 and 1300.

The Alemannic form of settlement with numerous individual farms can still be seen today. The place belongs to the old-free communities of the office of Zug.

In 1480 Menzingen became its own parish; previously the Schönbrunn Chapel was the place of worship for the mountain community. The Gothic ribbed vault in the choir of the church and the St. Anna chapel date from this period. During the construction of today's church (1620–1637) the magnificent high altar and the richly carved portal were created. Late baroque and classicism characterize the ceiling painting and the colored stucco .

The Libell dispute of 1604 brought political independence to three outer rural communities. This led to the building of a town hall in Menzingen in 1611. The house was sold in 1900 and still stands today as an inn at the Rössli at Hauptstrasse 5.

In 1821 37 craftsmen founded the Brotherly Association of Honorable Masters of Menzingen . The championship Menzingen took on the training of journeyman and later founded a school and a health insurance company. Since then, alongside the guilds in the city of Zug, it has been the only craftsmen's brotherhood in the canton of Zug. Today she mainly maintains the social life, especially on championship day during the carnival season . Traditionally there is a vigil, a children's ball with gifts and an evening championship ball.

In connection with the dispute over the distribution of the so-called Viennese congress money, the municipality declared its withdrawal from the cantonal association in 1823.

In 1835 a coal store was discovered above Finstersee in Greit im Steigholz am Höhronen . Despite the thinness of the seam , high-quality brown coal was mined in several places in the area . As a result of the difficult conditions, little income could be generated, so that the last company stopped mining in 1860. During the two world wars, production was resumed.

In 1844 the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross , who became known as the Menzinger Sisters and are active worldwide today, was founded. You also ran the Bernarda teacher seminar in Menzingen, which was closed in 2006.

The dissatisfaction of the residents of Neuheim that had been part of the Menzingen parish since the High Middle Ages, which was revealed during the Sonderbund War , led to the separation of the Neuheim parish, which took place in 1848.
