Josef Stierli SJ (born April 24, 1913 in Rapperswil ; † June 14, 1999 Bad Schönbrunn in the municipality of Menzingen ) was a Swiss Jesuit.

Life

Josef Stierli was the son of Josef Bernhard Stierli and his wife Karolina, geb. Gauch.

He attended grammar school in Einsiedeln Abbey , which he graduated with his Matura in 1933 and entered the Jesuit order in November 1934; He completed his two-year novitiate in Tisis near Feldkirch .

From 1936 to 1938 he studied philosophy and journalism at the Berchmanskolleg University of Applied Sciences in Pullach im Isar valley and during this time published a text on Aloisius Gonzaga on behalf of the Swiss Catholic Young Team Association, for whom the veneration of Aloisius was a concern .

From 1939 to 1943 Josef Stierli studied theology at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main , during this time he was also a student of Hugo Rahner at the theological faculty of the University of Innsbruck, which exiled to Sitten during the war .

In 1941 he was ordained a priest and from 1944 to 1946 he worked for the student pastoral care in Basel and from 1946 to 1955 novice master of the Swiss Jesuit province in Rue . Because of the foreign restrictions associated with the war, the Swiss Jesuits were forced to run their own novitiate and so Josef Stierli had to set up the novitiate in the Rue in Freiburg. During his almost ten years of service there, he was able to deal with the sources of the order in detail. In the archive of the Swiss Jesuits there is a copy of his work Biographische Bilder von Schweizer Jesuiten , which contains 60 miniature biographies .

Lassalle House, Bad Schönbrunn

From 1956 to 1962 he was Provincial of the Swiss Jesuit Province and came to Bad Schönbrunn in 1963 to work there until 1977 as director of the educational center and as a retreat leader and writer; During this time he planned the new building of the education house, which opened in 1970 and was given the name Lassalle House in 1993 .

Among other things, he wrote works on devotion to the Sacred Heart and the history of the Jesuit order, translated into several languages, and was considered a specialist in Ignatian spirituality . He edited the work Ignatius von Loyola founds the Society of Jesus (1982), written by his French brother André Ravier (1905–1999) , because this work put the inspiring spirit of the order's founder in the right light. In 1994 he was also involved in the development of the Ecumenical Church History of Switzerland and created numerous entries in the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland .

After his death he was buried in the order cemetery in Schönbrunn.
