On 10 November 2001 Martin Werlen has been prepared by the Convention voted in Einsiedeln the 58th abbot, the official confirmation of Pope John Paul II. On January 19, 2013, he announced that he would give up the post of ruling abbot of Einsiedeln Abbey after twelve years. On October 4, 2013, Pope Francis accepted the resignation with gratitude for “his contagious example” and at the same time appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the abbey until the new abbot took office. Urban Federer was confirmed as such by the Pope.

Martin Werlen took over the Provost St. Gerold as the new provost on August 15, 2020 . He follows Father Columban Reichlin, who is returning to Einsiedeln Monastery. Due to the SARS CoV2 situation, there was a silent change of provost.

«Provocation» for the 2012/2013 Year of Faith

In his 40-page paper, Uncovering the embers beneath the ashes, published in November 2012 , Werlen sets out his suggestions (a ‹pro› ‹vocation›) for possible concrete steps, particularly in the Catholic Church , whose condition he calls «dramatic» means «to kindle a fire together that gives warmth».

Inspired by the sermon of Pope Benedict XVI. , the statements from the book written by Joseph Ratzinger in 1965 and the Jesus word "I came to throw fire on the earth" ( Lk 12.49  EU ) Werlen developed in part "pointed" proposals, "which will probably stir up dust", for possible innovations in the church. He advocates more competencies ( privileges ) for monasteries, less traditionalism in the church, more credibility without the claim to possession of the truth, admission of more dialogue , expansion of the circle of decision-makers , clear observance of human rights , openness to criticism, room for maneuver for courageous things Moving, new rules for the appointment of bishops , revision of celibacy regulations , admission of women to the priesthood , new regulation of the competences of the cardinals and a new advisory body for the Pope.

Others

Werlen was an active user of Twitter during his time as abbot . Over 9,300 users followed him under his @AbtMartin account, and he sent more than 5,700 short messages. His parables, written on train journeys, appeared as a book with the title #Bahngleichnis . Martin Werlen has been tweeting again since September 2014, this time under his @MoenchMartin account.
