Georg Holzherr

Georg Holzherr OSB (* as Karl Maria Holzherr on January 22, 1927 in Neuendorf SO ; † February 26, 2012 in Altdorf UR ) was the 57th abbot of Einsiedeln Monastery .

Life

After graduating from the collegiate school in 1948, Holzherr entered the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Einsiedeln , where he took on the religious name Georg with his profession on September 8, 1949 . He received in the June 24, 1953 Montecassino the priesthood . After studying philosophy and theology in Einsiedeln and Rome, he became a Dr. iur. can. PhD. He then attended lectures in moral theology and human sciences in Munich . In addition to his pastoral work, he was a lecturer at the Einsiedeln Theological School from 1957. He also worked at the Zurich marriage court and as secretary of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation .

Georg Holzherr was elected Abbot of Einsiedeln on October 10, 1969. Pope Paul VI confirmed this election on November 3, 1969; on November 22nd he received the abbot's benediction from Benno Gut OSB and was introduced to his office. He was a member of the Swiss Bishops' Conference from 1969 to 2001 . After Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on November 9, 2001 , he was spiritual in the Benedictine convent of St. Lazarus in Seedorf.

Holzherr was considered an expert on the Rule of Benedict and published several books and articles on Benedictine topics.
