Ivo Auf der Maur

Ivo Auf der Maur OSB (* as Josef Maria Auf der Maur on August 14, 1924 ) is a Swiss mission benedictine and retired abbot of St. Otmarsberg .

Life

Ivo Auf der Maur, the first of six children of a carpenter from Steinen SZ , attended the Einsiedeln Abbey high school . In 1994, he joined the Congregation of Benedictine at Freiburg. On November 11, 1945 he made his profession in the Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien . After his philosophical and theological training in Friborg and at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome, he was ordained a priest on July 10, 1949 . After studying English in London , he worked as a missionary and teacher in Tanzania from 1951 to 1956 . After a two-year doctoral degree to become a Dr. theol. in Rome he worked for five years at the Benedictinum Freiburg.

In 1981 Ivo Auf der Maur became Prior , and from 1982 to 1999 he was the first abbot of the Mission Benedictines of St. Otmarsberg Abbey in Uznach , the youngest abbey in Switzerland. In 2014, under the direction of Notker Wolf , Abbot Primate of the Benedictines from Rome, and Abbot President Jeremias Schröder from St. Ottilien, his 65th jubilee as a priest and his 90th birthday were celebrated in the Abbey of St. Otmarsberg .

Auf der Maur has published numerous works and articles, especially in the field of missiology and religious history as well as on the pilgrimage site of Lourdes .
