Jeremias Schröder

Jeremias Schröder OSB (* 8. December 1964 as Maximilian Schröder in Bad Wörishofen ) is a German Benedictine and Abbot President of ottilien congregation and Alterzabt of St. Ottilien Archabbey in Bavaria / Germany.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1984, Schröder entered the Archabbey of the Missionary Benedictines in St. Ottilien as a novice and made his profession there in 1985 . From 1985 to 1990 he studied philosophy and theology in Rome , then from 1990 to 1995 history in Oxford . He was ordained a priest in 1992 and, while studying at Oxford, was spiritual at the Benedictine Abbey of Stanbrook near Malvern .

In 1994 he returned to St. Ottilien as secretary of the then archabbot Notker Wolf , zelator , archivist and editor of the magazine “Missionsblätter” and also took part in the missionary work of the order in China. On October 5, 2000, he was elected 6th Archabbot of St. Ottilien for life by the chapter of the Archabbey and was also superior of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien after his predecessor Notker Wolf had been elected Abbot Primate in Rome . His pre-predecessor, Bishop Viktor Josef Dammertz OSB of Augsburg, Jeremias Schröder issued on 28 October 2000 at the Abbey Church of St. Ottilien the abbatial blessing . As a motto of his service he chose: Respice Stellam - look at the star .

As Archabbot, Jeremias was head of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien with around 1100 monks worldwide from 2000 to 2012 . With the separation of the office of the Archabbot of St. Ottilien and the Abbot President of the Congregation, Schröder was elected the first Abbot President of the Congregation for eight years on October 15, 2012.
