Wolfgang Öxler

Wolfgang Öxler OSB (born May 1, 1957 in Dillingen on the Danube as Erwin Öxler ) is a German educator, Benedictine and archabbot of the Archabbey of Sankt Ottilien .

Life

In his hometown, Erwin Öxler trained as an educator from 1976 to 1979 at the local specialist academy for social pedagogy , which at the time was sponsored by the Dillinger Franciscan Sisters . He then worked in what was then the Ottillian boarding school and then studied religious education at the Catholic University of Eichstätt , Munich department, and then theology (1981 to 1987) at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

1979 Öxler entered the monastery of the Mission Benedictines in St. Ottilien. There, as a Benedictine monk, he received the religious name of St. Wolfgang , made his solemn profession in 1983 and was finally ordained a priest in 1988. Between 1987 and 1988 he worked as a deacon in Altenstadt (Upper Bavaria) and at the action center in Benediktbeuern monastery . After his ordination , Öxler became prefect of the boarding school of the Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium St. Ottilien , where he worked as a religion teacher. Then he worked in the retreat house of the monastery. There the music-loving clergyman devoted himself in particular to youth work.

In 2009 Öxler was appointed prior of the dependent priory of Jakobsberg Monastery and head of the educational center there. On December 17, 2012, the electoral chapter in St. Ottilien elected him for an indefinite period as the seventh Archabbot of the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Ottilien in Upper Bavaria, the ancestral monastery of the Ottilian Benedictine Congregation .

On January 20, 2013 he was abbot and inaugurated by Bishop Konrad Zdarsa in the abbey church in St. Ottilien. His motto is: Close to people full of God .
