Controversy

Statements by Eleganti were heavily criticized in a video published by the kath.net portal on March 10, 2020 and in an interview with Roland Noé on March 15 . Eleganti made a connection between the COVID-19 pandemic and the behavior of countries and individuals. He called for the fight against the disease through prayer , penance , repentance and trust in God and referred to the example of saints like Charles Borromeo or Gregory the Great in similar epidemic situations. He described preventive measures by the churches against the pandemic, such as hygiene regulations, as the surrender of faith to the virus. He felt that receiving communion in particular did not pose a risk of contagion, as he was convinced that God was protecting the believers in a supernatural way from being harmed by receiving the sacraments . Both the Swiss Bishops' Conference and the Zurich Health Directorate contradicted this ; the President of the Synod Council of Zurich Catholics called Eleganti's theses "cynical". Bamberg's Archbishop Ludwig Schick from Germany also expressed indirect criticism . The Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chur, Peter Bürcher , instructed Eleganti on March 17, 2020 that he was only allowed to express himself publicly on the subject with the consent of him and the media spokesman for the Diocese, Giuseppe Gracia , as he was not allowed to comment on the subject "Caused confusion among the faithful and in the public about the attitude of the diocese of Chur in this regard".

Others

He is Honorary Conventual Chaplain of the Helvetic Association of the Order of Malta .

On March 3, 2012, he became a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Class VII World Religions.
