Jakob Andreas Ivo Fürer (born April 20, 1930 in Gossau ) was Bishop of St. Gallen from 1995 to 2005 .

Life

Ivo Fürer studied Catholic theology at the University of Innsbruck and Canon Law at the Roman Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1957 he was awarded a Dr. iur. can. PhD . In 1954 he received in the Cathedral of St. Gallen , the ordination . From 1958 to 1963 he was vicar in Herisau and from 1963 to 1967 vicar in Altstätten . From 1967 he officiated as episcopal secretary and from 1969 as episcopal vicar in St. Gallen. In 1972 he became President of the Swiss and Diocesan Synod, and from 1977 to 1995 he was Secretary General of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences . In 1991 he was elected dean of the cathedral.

Ivo Fürer was elected Bishop of St. Gallen on March 28, 1995 and was confirmed by Pope John Paul II on March 29, 1995 . He received his episcopal ordination on June 5, 1995, from his predecessor, Bishop Otmar Mäder ; Co- consecrators were the Bishops Henri Salina , Abbot of Saint-Maurice , and Karl Lehmann , Bishop of Mainz . His motto is: "Serve the people of God".

His resignation for his 75th birthday was on October 16, 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. accepted. He donated his episcopal ordination to his successor, Markus Büchel .

Act

In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg (Switzerland) for his services to the implementation of the concerns of the Second Vatican Council on the diocese, on the Swiss and European level . In 2007 he was made an honorary senator of the University of St. Gallen , which recognized "his important contribution to the promotion of openness and tolerance across denominations and cultures".

He was a co-founder of the Working Group of Christian Churches in Switzerland (AGCK). Since his retirement he has been active as President of the Fastenopfer Board of Trustees and is still a member of the Swiss Bishops' Conference, where he oversees the Diakonie and Aid organizations. In addition, since 1997 he has headed the secretariat of the Council of the European Bishops' Conferences based in St. Gallen. From 1998 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Foundation Council of the Fastenopfer Aid .

Ivo Fürer is a member of the Swiss Student Association .
