Guido Vergauwen

Guido Vergauwen OP (born August 22, 1944 ) is a Belgian religious and fundamental theologian .

Life

After graduating from the Sint-Jozef Klein Seminarie in Sint-Niklaas , a town in the Belgian province of East Flanders , joined Guido Vergauwen 1962 in the Congregation of the Dominican one. He studied philosophy (1963–1966) and theology (1966–1968) at the Studium Generale of the Flemish order province in Leuven . In 1969 he was ordained a priest . He was assistant at the chair for moral theology at the Swiss University of Freiburg (1970–1971), at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (1971–1972) and at the chair for dogmatic theology at the University of Freiburg (1972–1975). In 1975 he was at the theological faculty in Freiburg im Üechtland with a thesis Absolute and Finite Freedom. Schelling's doctrine of creation and fall with Colman-Eugène O'Neill OP and Philibert Secretan received his doctorate theologiae .

In 1975 he became head of studies in the field of theology at the Paulus Academy in Zurich - Witikon, built by the architect Justus Dahinden, as well as lecturer in spirituality at the seminary for pastoral care in Zurich and advisor for theological training of priests in the dean's office in Zurich City. In 1985 he held a lectureship for Catholic theology with a focus on fundamental theology at the University of Zurich .

In 1985, Guido Vergauwen was offered a full professorship for Fundamental Theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Freiburg, associated with the management of the Institute for Ecumenical Studies . He was Dean of the Faculty of Theology (2000–2007) and Vice Rector of the University of Freiburg (2003–2007). Vergauwen was rector of the University of Freiburg from 2007 to 2015; Astrid Epiney was his successor in 2015 . Vergauwen has been Provincial of the Swiss Section of the Dominican Order since 2015 .

He held numerous other offices, such as President of the Ecumenical Commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference . From 1993 to 2002 he was a member of the General Council of the Dominican Order. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum).

He is an editorial member of the Freiburg journal for philosophy and theology as well as the series Studia Oecumenica Friburgensia and other series.
