Werner De Schepper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werner De Schepper (born June 3, 1965 in Belgium ) is a Swiss journalist of Belgian origin.

Life

Werner De Schepper grew up in a strictly Catholic environment in Olten . His parents, a baker and a teacher, moved from Belgium to Switzerland in 1963. After graduating from the Olten Cantonal School in 1984, De Schepper studied theology and journalism at the University of Friborg . He wrote his licentiate thesis on moral theology. During his studies he began his journalistic career with the Solothurner Nachrichten, a headline of the Catholic newspaper Vaterland . After completing his studies, he became a domestic editor at the Swiss Political Correspondence news agency , where he caused a sensation in 1993 when he opened the mud fight over Federal Council candidate Christiane Brunner . In the same year he switched to Ringier Verlag , where he first wrote for Schweizer Illustrierte and, from 1995, for the tabloid SonntagsBlick and later for the Blick . From 2003 to 2007 he was editor-in-chief of Blick.

From 2008 he was deputy editor-in-chief of the Aargauer Zeitung and gained his first television experience on Tele M1 . At TeleBärn he took over the post of editor-in-chief in 2013, but only for a short time before he appeared as a moderator for Tele M1 and as a columnist for the Aargauer Zeitung. In 2015 it was planned that De Schepper would take over the management of the Catholic Media Center . However, he did not take up the position and at the same time resigned as president of the media commission of the Bishops' Conference in protest against the dismissal of the information officer Simon Spengler , which he held for two years. Instead, he returned to Schweizer Illustrierte as co-editor-in-chief.

Controversy

In the course of the MeToo debate , allegations against De Schepper were also loud. In December 2017, the Tages-Anzeiger published an article according to which he allegedly harassed employees across the editorial offices of SonntagsBlick, Blick , TeleBärn and Aargauer Zeitung as a manager. Twelve women anonymously made allegations of verbal and physical abuse in the article. These allegations did not have any criminal consequences, but De Schepper apologized to his editorial team.

Private

Born in Belgium, De Schepper completed his military service in Belgium. He now also has Swiss citizenship.

In 2010 he took over the Olten restaurant, Flügelrad, together with Martin Allemann, Pedro Lenz and Alex Capus , who left in 2017 .

Despite his strict Catholic origins, De Schepper does not see himself as an exemplary Christian, but rather as a “happy sinner”. After graduating from high school, he entered a Capuchin monastery at the age of 19 . At the same time he fell in love with his hairdresser, who later became his wife and mother of two of his children, and he left the monastery again.

Werner De Schepper is separated from his wife and now lives with Aargau National Councilor Irène Kälin ( Greens ) and their son in Oberflachs . He describes himself as left-wing liberal and in 2012 was considering the candidacy for mayor of Olten.
