The canton school Olten , also called canton school Hardwald , is a cantonal middle school in the Swiss city of Olten . Their educational offer includes a grammar school , a technical middle school , a Progymnasium ( secondary school P ) and a preliminary course for the teacher training college.
The concrete building from the years 1968 to 1974 is one of the buildings in the canton of Solothurn that is worthy of protection and, according to the Solothurn monument conservator Stefan Blank, is "one of the most important works of post-war modernism in the canton of Solothurn".
location
The canton school is 10 minutes from Olten train station in a clearing in the Hardwald. The shape of the rising terrain is reflected in the floor plan and section of the building. In the basement, the building, which is divided into several wings, was constructed using in- situ concrete , while the upper floors were prefabricated. It was materialized in smooth, rough exposed concrete and rust-brown Corten steel, and outside stairs and terraces connect the different levels.
history
In 1929 the cantonal grammar school reform took place in the canton of Solothurn, in which the municipality council of Olten, the district school administration and the supervisory commission of the commercial and traffic school hoped with a joint petition in 1930 that a cantonal grammar school would be set up in Olten. Although the then educational director Robert Schöpfer and his successor Oskar Stampfli voted benevolently in favor of the petition, nothing happened. Another submission in 1936 resulted in a law for the establishment of a cantonal educational establishment in the lower part of the canton. Since the canton was in poor financial shape at the time and the request explicitly came from the Olten region, the city of Olten had to contribute financially to the cantonal educational establishment and business school at the time.
Nevertheless, Olten still wanted to have its own canton school. The population of the region also saw a disadvantage compared to other regions. Therefore, in 1957, the then rector of the Olten schools, Arnold Kamber , submitted a motion to the Solothurn cantonal council for the creation of a high school diploma in Olten. The cantonal government then drew up a law that was adopted by the people of the canton of Solothurn in 1960. Due to the spatial conditions, a new building was considered and in 1963 the Solothurn people approved the “Law on the Cantonal School Olten”. The task was to fully expand the cantonal educational institution at that time into a middle school with all maturity departments, the commercial and traffic school and a sub-seminar.
In March 1962, the canton acquired building land from the Olten community for the planned cantonal school and in February 1964 the cantonal council decided on a project loan of 500,000 Swiss francs . On July 2, 1967, the people approved the construction loan of around 33 million Swiss francs with 16'655 votes in favor to 5'559 against. The Baden architects Marc Funk and Hans Ulrich Fuhrimann won the architecture competition in 1962/1963 and were allowed to plan the building. In 1969 the groundbreaking took place at Hardwald . On April 24, 1973, the newly built school facility was ready to move into. In October 1973 the indoor swimming pool followed , which was made possible with an additional building loan approved by the people on February 7, 1971.
The canton school Olten is listed in the inventory of buildings worthy of protection from 1940 to 1980 , which was compiled and published in 2013 , as concrete construction is one of the most important works of post-war modernism in the canton of Solothurn.
After the Solothurn Cantonal Council gave the green light for a complete renovation at the end of 2012, construction work began on June 27, 2016. The renovation of the facade and the refurbishment of the indoor swimming pool belonging to the school were completed in autumn 2017. Another stage is the interior construction. The entire renovation is running parallel to school operations and should be completed by the end of 2021. The costs are around 85.8 million Swiss francs.
