Hugo Stamm (born March 29, 1949 in Schaffhausen ) is a Swiss journalist for the Swiss news portal watson.ch . From the 1970s to 2016, he worked for the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger on new religious movements , sects , esotericism , occultism and charlatans . He has given numerous lectures on these topics in German-speaking countries and has written several non-fiction books and a novel.

Life

Hugo Stamm grew up in Schaffhausen. After the teachers' seminar he began studying philosophy in Zurich , which he broke off. In 1974 he completed an editorial traineeship at the Tages-Anzeiger , where he became an editor in 1975. In 1974, on behalf of the Tages-Anzeiger, he did his first research on VPM , Scientology and other groups and dealt particularly with the subject of indoctrination . In response to numerous reactions to his report, he continued research and published his first book on Scientology in 1982.

According to his own statements, Stamm received death threats and was knocked down in the 1990s. Who was behind it could never be found out despite criminal charges. He is said to have fended off dozen criminal and civil lawsuits. A comparison was made against the VPM in two trials.

Hugo Stamm is very reluctant to provide information about his own religious convictions. According to his statement, he fights for the intellectual freedom of the individual and criticizes where he sees this freedom restricted in some way.

In 2014 Hugo Stamm took partial retirement at the Tages-Anzeiger . From 2006 to 2016 he ran the popular cult blog on religious and cult issues. From then on, his sect blog appeared weekly on Saturdays on the Swiss news portal watson.ch .

Stamm lives in Zurich and has two children.
