Pierre Bürcher , also Peter or Icelandic Pétur Bürcher (born December 20, 1945 in Fiesch , Canton Valais , Switzerland ), is a Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus bishop of Reykjavík . Bürcher has been Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chur since May 20, 2019 .

Life

Peter Bürcher grew up in Fiesch and Fieschertal and attended primary school in Nyon . After that he went to high school Collège St-Louis in Geneva and then from 1964 to 1966 Stiftsschule the Lyceum Einsiedeln , where he Matura Type A acquired. From 1966 to 1971 he attended the seminary and completed a degree in theology at the University of Freiburg . He graduated in 1971 with a licentiate in theology.

On March 27, 1971, he was ordained a priest in Geneva . From 1971 to 1977 Bürcher was vicar in Freiburg, he was a member of the diocesan synod from 1972 to 1975. 1977 to 1980 he was vicar in Lausanne . From 1980 to 1989 he was pastor of the parish St. Jean in Vevey and dean of the deanery St. Martin from 1985 to 1989. 1989 to 1990 he worked at the seminary in Freiburg and at the IFEC institute in Paris . From 1990 to 1994 he was the Regens of the Freiburg seminary.

February 2, 1994 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To the titular of Maximiana in Byzacena and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg . The episcopal ordination received his Bishop Pierre Mamie on March 12 of the same year in the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Friborg ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Sitten , Henri Cardinal Schwery and Gabriel Bullet , auxiliary bishop emeritus in Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg.

On August 28, 2001, Bürcher was appointed General President of the Catholica Unio Internationalis by the Holy See , and on June 14, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Reykjavík on October 30, 2007 . Pope Francis accepted the resignation he had submitted before reaching the age limit on September 18, 2015. Bürcher has been Apostolic Administrator of the vacant Diocese of Chur since May 20, 2019 .

Bürcher is the conventual chaplain of the Helvetic Association of the Order of Malta .
