Joannes Baptist Matthijs Gijsen (born October 7, 1932 in Oeffelt , Netherlands ; † June 24, 2013 in Sittard , Netherlands) was a Roman Catholic bishop of Roermond and Reykjavík .

Life

Joannes Gijsen studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Roermond and received on 6 April 1957, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was a chaplain in Valkenburg until 1959 and then a teacher at the Small Seminary in the Rolduc Abbey near Kerkrade . He studied theology and church history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and received his doctorate in church history . From 1963 to 1966 he had lectureships at the large seminary in Roermond and from 1964 at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht in Maastricht . Until 1972 he was also rector of the Sint-Elisabethsdal monastery in Nunhem near Leudal .

On January 20, 1972 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Roermond; this happened against the will of the Dutch bishops, especially Bernard Jan Cardinal Alfrinks . On February 13, 1972 he was in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome by Paul VI. consecrated bishop. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Utrecht , Cardinal Bernard Jan Alfrink , and the Archbishop of Armagh , Cardinal William John Conway . His motto is Parate viam Domini (German: Prepares the way of the Lord). He was particularly committed to the reorganization of the diocese and implementation of the resolutions of the Second Vatican Council . Gijsen repeatedly came into conflict with the Dutch Bishops' Conference because of his conservative stance. He rebuilt the conservative Rolduc seminary, where many of today's Dutch clergy were trained.

In 1993 he had to resign from office for health reasons. Until 1996 he was titular bishop of Traiectum ad Mosam pastor in the Walpersdorf monastery in Austria . In 1995 Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Administrator in 1995 and one year later Bishop of Iceland's capital Reykjavík . On October 30, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. Gijsen's application for resignation due to age reasons. He took his retirement home in the Carmelite convent in Kollenberg.

In April 2014, after an internal investigation , the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands announced that Joannes Gijsen had sexually abused two boys between 1958 and 1961. According to media reports, Gijsen had forced both victims to have sexual contact and one of the two boys to have oral sex. Sexual abuse allegations were made against Gijsen again in 2011, but he denied knowing the victim. A commission resumed the cases a week after Gijsen's death in 2013.
