Bernard Jan Cardinal Alfrink (born July 5, 1900 in Nijkerk , † December 17, 1987 in Nieuwegein near Utrecht) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht .

Life

Alfrink studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and at the Bible School in Jerusalem . He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1924 and served as a pastor from 1929 to 1933 . From 1933 to 1945 he worked as a professor for biblical studies in Rijsenburg, 1945 to 1951 for the Old Testament in Nijmegen.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on May 28, 1951 titular Archbishop of Tyana and Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Utrecht. He received the episcopal ordination on July 17, 1951 by the Apostolic Internuntius in the Netherlands, Paolo Giobbe . Co- consecrators were Josephus Hubertus Gulielmus Lemmens (left) , Bishop of Roermond , and Johannes Hendrik Olav Smit , Titular Bishop of Paralus . After the death of the Archbishop of Utrecht, Johannes de Jong , Alfrink became his successor on October 31, 1955. John XXIII took him on March 28, 1960 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gioacchino ai Prati di Castello in the college of cardinals . Alfrink took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 , which he shaped through his will to reform. On December 6, 1975 he resigned as Archbishop of Utrecht. He attended the conclave in 1963 , in August 1978 and in October of the same year . Although already 85 years old, he took part in an extraordinary meeting of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican in 1985 as a guest of honor . Cardinal Alfrink died two years later in Nieuwegein.

Positions and attitudes

Cardinal Alfrink was considered liberal and progressive. He spoke out in favor of abolishing celibacy and allowing contraceptives. He also wanted to introduce a “Dutch Catechism” that broke with many traditions. At the urging of Paul VI. however, he often sought compromises between conservatives and liberals.

From 1952 to 1974 Alfrink was President of the Dutch section of Pax Christi ; from 1965 to 1975 also the entire association. He also campaigned for the establishment of the Inter-Church Peace Council in the Netherlands in 1966.
