Johannes Olav Smit

Johannes Hendrik Olav Smit (born February 19, 1883 in Deventer ; † June 23, 1972 in Rome ) was a Dutch clergyman and the pastor of the Catholic Church in Norway from 1922 to 1928.

Life

He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1906 . Pope Pius XI appointed him on April 11, 1922 Vicar Apostolic of Norway and Svalbard and Titular Bishop of Paralus .

The Archbishop of Utrecht , Henricus van de Wetering , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Augustinus Callier , Bishop of Haarlem , and Arnold Diepen , Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch .

For reasons that were never cleared, he left Norway in 1928, without saying goodbye to his rectory or the Norwegian king, to settle in Rome. Here he became canon of St. Peter's Basilica . He attended all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
