The diocese of Roermond ( Latin Dioecesis Ruremundensis , Dutch Bisdom Roermond ) is one of the seven Roman Catholic dioceses of the Dutch ecclesiastical province and has its seat in Roermond .
history
The first Diocese of Roermond was formed on May 12, 1559 from areas of the Archdiocese of Cologne and the Diocese of Liège ; it was disbanded on November 26, 1801 by the French occupiers, who wanted a larger and clearer structure. Most of the diocese was added to the diocese of Liège. The new, first diocese of Aachen and the Apostolic Vicariate of Grave-Nijmegen were founded from a smaller part .
The current (second) diocese was established in 1840 as Apostolic Vicariate Limburg back from areas of the archbishopric of Cologne and of Liège. Its borders coincide with the political borders of the Limburg province . On March 4, 1853, the vicariate was raised to today's diocese of Roermond.
statistics
In 2007, around 838,000 Catholics were registered in 13 deaneries in the Diocese of Roermond (74.6% of the total population), of which an average of 37,800 (3% of the total population) attend Sunday services (as of December 31, 2007).
The episcopal church has been the Saint Christophorus Cathedral in Roermond since 1661 ; the anniversary of their consecration is celebrated on September 3rd.
