history
With the construction of the Christoffelkerk, which began in 1410 as a basilica on a cross-shaped floor plan, an older parish church outside the walls of Roermond was to be replaced. The building plans were changed during the 15th century; the choir was completed as a three-aisled hall, the nave was designed with five aisles.
The building was completed in the course of the 16th century. In 1661 the church was elevated to the status of bishopric of the diocese of Roermond established in 1559.
The church was badly damaged in World War II when German troops blew up the 78 m high tower built into the western part of the nave on the day before the city was liberated by Allied troops. The tower was restored to its old form after the war. The earthquake in the Roermond area in 1992 caused renewed damage. Another extensive renovation took place between 2005 and 2007.
Furnishing
The so-called Dalheimer Kreuz dates from the 13th century, and after the secularization of the Dalheim Cistercian convent in 1804 it became the property of the cathedral.
At the top of the tower is a 3.57 meter high gilded statue of St. Christopher. Five bells hang in the tower.
organ
The organ was built in 1957 by the organ builder L. Verschueren . The instrument has 51 sounding registers (plus a transmission into the pedal on three manuals and pedal).
