Franciscus Jozef Maria Wiertz (born December 2, 1942 in Kerkrade ) is a Dutch clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Roermond .

Life

Frans Wiertz was the oldest of nine children of a bourgeois Catholic family from the Kerkrad middle class. From the age of 12 he attended the Rolduc boys' seminar in Kerkrade, where he was prepared for a later spiritual career. In 1961 he graduated from high school . However, he decided not to attend the major seminary afterwards, as he was not yet sure of his destiny as a priest at that time in his life . Instead, he first studied for a year at the Catholic University in Nijmegen , but during that year he realized that he was actually more inclined towards the priestly career. So Wiertz began in 1962 with a visit to the Philosophicum of the diocese , which at that time still had its home at Rolduc Monastery, but also held classes in Heerlen . In 1964 Wiertz began as a theology student at the large seminary (seminary) in Roermond. On September 23, 1967, he was ordained a deacon by the Bishop of Roermond, Petrus Moors , in the Caroluskapel of the major seminary in Roermond . He was ordained a priest on March 30, 1968 by Bishop Petrus Moors in the Cathedral of St. Christoffel in Roermond .

Pope John Paul II appointed him 23rd Bishop of Roermond on July 10, 1993, and thus 9th Bishop of Roermond since the re-establishment of the diocese in 1853. On September 25, 1993, the Archbishop of Utrecht , Adrianus Cardinal Simonis , donated him to him at the Cathedral of St. Christoffel the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Roermond, Alphonsus Castermans , and Johannes ter Schure , bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch . His motto is: Geef, Heer, ran en geloof aan uw Kerk (German: "Give, Lord, love and faith in your church").

On December 2, 2017, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
