Hendrikus Marie Gerardus Smeets , called Harrie , (born October 22, 1960 in Heerlen , Netherlands ) is a Dutch clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Roermond .

Life

Hendrikus Smeets initially obtained a master's degree in literature from the University of Utrecht in 1985 and then studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Rolduc Abbey . On June 13, 1992 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Roermond.

He worked as a chaplain in Thorn and as a pastor in Maastricht . In 2003 he became pastor and dean in Venray . In 2015 he was also appointed cathedral capitular and was a member of the diocesan commission for the commitment of the clergy. In addition, he led the pilgrimage for the province of Limburg .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Roermond on October 10, 2018. The Bishop of Rotterdam and chairman of the Dutch Bishops' Conference, Hans van den Hende , donated him episcopal ordination on December 8th of the same year in the Christoffelkathedraal of Roermond . Co-consecrators were his predecessor, retired Bishop Frans Wiertz and Everard de Jong , Auxiliary Bishop of Roermond. His motto is "love people in God's name".

Harrie Smeets is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . He has been a member of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem for several years . In 2019 he was appointed Grand Cross Knight of the Papal Order of Knights by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien .
