Hans van den Hende (actually Johannes Hermannes Jozefus van den Hende ; born January 9, 1964 in Groningen , Netherlands ) is Bishop of Rotterdam .

Life

After attending school in Haren , he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of Utrecht . He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1991 . Later he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , where he received his doctorate in 2002 with a dissertation on particular councils and bishops' conferences from the Second Vatican Council to the CIC from 1982 , which was supervised by Gianfranco Ghirlanda as a doctoral supervisor .

On January 1, 2000 van den Hende was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden by Bishop Willem Jacobus Eijk .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Hans van den Hende on September 9, 2006 as coadjutor bishop with the right to succeed Martinus Muskens in the office of Bishop of Breda. The episcopal ordination received his November 25, 2006 in Breda his predecessor and his pre-predecessor in office, Martinus Muskens, and Hubertus Ernst , as well as the Bishop of Groningen-Leeuwarden, Wim Eijk . His motto is Sine timore serviamus illi . Hans van den Hende was the youngest of the Dutch bishops in 2006 and the tenth bishop of the Breda diocese since 1853, the year the Dutch government allowed the Vatican to reappoint bishops in the Netherlands. On October 31, 2007 he was appointed Bishop of Breda.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on May 10, 2011 as the fifth Bishop of Rotterdam and successor to Adrianus Herman van Luyn . The inauguration took place on July 2 of the same year.

In 2016, the Dutch bishops elected Hans van den Hende as chairman of the Dutch Bishops' Conference for a five-year term (until 2021).
