Gianfranco Ghirlanda

Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ (born July 5, 1942 in Rome ) is an Italian Roman Catholic theologian , lawyer and canon lawyer. Until 2010 he was rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Life

Gianfranco Ghirlanda studied law at La Sapienza University in Rome and received his doctorate there in 1966 . He earned his studies by working in a factory at Fiat . In 1966 he became a member of the Society of Jesus and from then on studied Catholic theology and canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1973 he received the sacrament of ordination and earned a Bachelor of Theology degree . In 1975 he obtained his licentiate in canon law with summa cum laude and received his doctorate in canon law in 1978 with a thesis rated summa cum laude . Ghirlanda taught since 1975 at the Institute of Religious Studies, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Canon Law of the Gregorian. In 1986 he became a full professor; from 1995 to 2004 he was Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law there. From September 2004 to September 2010 he was Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Gianfranco Ghirlanda is also consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (since 2003), the Congregation for Bishops (since 1999), the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (since 1993), the Congregation for the Clergy (since 1997), Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life (since 1987). Other offices of Gianfranco Ghirlandas are the office of consultor of the Pontifical Council for the Laity (1990-2016) and that for the interpretation of legal texts (since 1997), as well as prelate and trainee at the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature and from 1993 to 2004 judge of the Court of Appeal of the Courts of the Vatican City State . Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life on October 6, 2018 .

Ghirlanda is considered a profound expert on the retreats of St. Ignatius of Loyola . Ghirlanda has published several books and published over 100 research papers.
