Jan Liesen , full name Johannes Wilhelmus Maria Liesen , (born September 17, 1960 in Oosterhout , North Brabant province ) is a Dutch theologian , biblical scholar and Roman Catholic Bishop of Breda .

Life

Jan Liesen, son of a farming family, studied at the seminary in Kerkrade from 1978 to 1983 and was ordained a priest in 1984 . He studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem from 1985 to 1990 and received his PhD in Biblical Studies in 1998 . With his dissertation on Ben Sira , he presented a detailed analysis of a central text ( Sir 39.12-35  EU ) on “practical” wisdom (proven in action) and addressed the “invitation to praise God”.

Since 1990 he has taught Biblical Exegesis of the New Testament , Biblical Theology and the Hebrew Bible ( Biblia Hebraica ) at the “Groot Seminarie” in Rolduc Abbey . Since 1996 he has also been the librarian of the local academic library. He has also taught Hebrew Bible and exegesis in the seminaries of the dioceses of Haarlem (2000–2003) and 's-Hertogenbosch (2001–2006). Since 2004 he has been a member of the International Theological Commission, a commission of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him titular bishop of Tunnuna and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch in 2010 . The bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch, Antoon Hurkmans , donated him episcopal ordination on September 18, 2010 ; Co- consecrators were Franciscus Wiertz , Bishop of Roermond, and Joseph Frans Lescrauwaet MSC, Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Haarlem .

On November 26, 2011, Jan Liesen was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Breda , a diocese that is essentially located in the provinces of Zeeland and North Brabant .

In 2016, the Dutch bishops elected Jan Liesen as vice-chairman of the Dutch Bishops' Conference for a five-year term (until 2021).
