Live and act

Van Luyn was born in Groningen as the fifth of ten children. From 1948 he went to the small seminar of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Ugchelen and decided, like two of his brothers, to become Salesians of Don Bosco. In 1954 he took his first vows. In 1955 he began his philosophical studies for the teaching post in Twello . After practical work he continued his studies in theology at the Athenaeum of the Salesians Don Bosco in Turin . In 1964 he completed his theological licentiate and was ordained a priest on February 9, 1964 by the Nuncio Beltrami in 's-Heerenberg . After further practical activities as a teacher of Latin and Greek in 's-Heerenberg and The Hague, he enrolled for a doctoral degree in systematic theology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen . During this time he was prefect of studies in the Nijmegen branch. In 1969 he passed his dogmatic doctoral examination. From 1969 to 1974 he was director of the Salesian Theological College in Nijmegen and served as secretary to the provincial. He also taught fundamental theology at the Albertinum Nijmegen .

From 1969 to 1975 he was Provincial Vicar and from 1975 to 1981 Provincial of the Dutch Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco. From 1978 to 1981 he was chairman of the Conference of Dutch Superiors of Priestly Orders. In 1980 Pope John Paul II appointed him a member of the Special Synod of Bishops in the Netherlands in Rome. In 1981, the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco appointed him provincial superior for the study houses of the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome. He returned to the Netherlands in 1991 when he was appointed general secretary of the Roman Catholic Church Cooperative in the Netherlands.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on November 27, 1993 to succeed Ronald Philippe Bär OSB as the fourth bishop of Rotterdam. The episcopal ordination took place on February 12, 1994 by Cardinal Adrian Simonis , Monsignor Huub Ernst and Bishop Tarcisio Bertone SDB. His coat of arms is: Collabora Evangelio .

In January 1995 he took over from Bishop Ernst as chairman of the Dutch section of the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi . From 2000 to 2006 the polyglot bishop worked as vice-president, from 2006 to 2012 as president of the EU bishops' commission COMECE, established in 1980 . From January 2008 to July 2011 he was chairman of the Dutch Bishops' Conference . Van Luyn was also a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture .

On January 14, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation from the office of Bishop of Rotterdam put forward by Adrianus Herman van Luyn for reasons of age.

Adrianus Herman van Luyn is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 2010 he was appointed Commander- in-Chief by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Foley as Commander with Star of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in the Papal Lay Order by Antonius Hurkmans , Grand Prior of the Dutch Lieutenancy .
