Hubertus Ernst (born April 8, 1917 in Breda , Netherlands ; † May 19, 2017 ibid) was a Dutch clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Breda .

Life

Hubertus Ernst was on June 7, 1941 Bishop Peter Hopmans to priests of the diocese of Breda ordained . He was a professor in moral theology at the former Bovendonk Seminary in Hoeven and vicar general in the diocese of Breda.

He was on November 3, 1967 by Pope Paul VI. appointed ninth Bishop of Breda. His predecessor, Gerardus Henricus De Vet , had died suddenly, not yet 50 years old. The Archbishop of Utrecht , Bernard Jan Cardinal Alfrink , donated him episcopal ordination on December 17th of the same year . Co- consecrators were Martien Antoon Jansen , Bishop of Rotterdam , Pieter Antoon Nierman , Bishop of Groningen , Petrus Joannes Antonius Moors , Bishop of Roermond and Johannes Bluyssen , Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch . His motto was: Christ heri et hodie - that means: "Christ yesterday and today".

On May 6, 1992, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Only thirty months later did he consecrate his successor Martinus Muskens as the new Bishop of Breda.

Ernst was known as a progressive but thoughtful person. Even after his retirement he was much in demand as a speaker, especially on ethical issues. The bishop was chairman of the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi in the Netherlands for eighteen years , where he defended nuclear pacifism , for example .
