Adrianus Johannes Cardinal Simonis (born November 26, 1931 in Lisse , Netherlands ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht .

Life

Adrianus Johannes Simonis is the oldest of eleven children of a dentist. He studied in Hageveld and Warmond trays Catholic theology and philosophy . On June 15, 1957, he received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a pastor in two parishes. From 1966 to 1969, he specialized in Rome specialist exegesis of the New Testament .

On December 29, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Rotterdam . He was ordained bishop on March 20, 1971 by Martinus Jansen , his predecessor in the episcopate; Co- consecrators were Pieter Jan Antoon Moors , Bishop Emeritus of Roermond , and Johannes Bluyssen , Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch . His motto is Ut cognoscant te ("So that they can recognize you").

On June 27, 1983, Simonis was first coadjutor archbishop and in the same year, on December 3, archbishop of Utrecht. He led the Dutch Bishops' Conference for more than twenty years . On May 25, 1985, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the college of cardinals .

Cardinal Simonis was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. On April 14, 2007, he accepted the resignation request that Simonis had submitted because of reaching the age limit. Until the enthronement of his successor Willem Jacobus Eijk , who was appointed on December 11, 2007, he headed the archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator .
