Julio Cardinal Terrazas Sandoval CSsR (born March 7, 1936 in Vallegrande , Bolivia , † December 9, 2015 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra ) was Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra . He was also president of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference three times .

Life

Julio Terrazas Sandoval entered the Redemptorist Order after his school days and received the sacrament of priestly ordination on July 29, 1962 after theological , philosophical and socio-pedagogical studies in Cordoba and Lille . He worked as a superior of the Redemptorist Community in Vallegrande until Pope Paul VI. on April 15, 1978 appointed auxiliary bishop in La Paz and titular bishop of Apisa Maius . He received the episcopal ordination on June 8th of the same year by the Archbishop of Sucre , Josef Clemens Cardinal Maurer . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia, Giuseppe Laigueglia , and the Archbishop of La Paz, Jorge Manrique Hurtado .

On January 9, 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Oruro , and then on February 6, 1991, Archbishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra . From 1985 to 1991 and from 1998 to 2005 he was President of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference . On February 21, 2001 Julio Terrazas Sandoval was admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular Church of San Giovanni Battista de Rossi , making him the first cardinal to be born in Bolivia. In 2004 he participated as papal representative at the 10th Eucharistic Congress of Argentina. He took part in the 2005 conclave after the death of John Paul II . In 2006 he was again President of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference, in 2009 he was re-elected for a further term until 2012.

On 12 November 2010 he was awarded the Faculty of Theology of Trier , the honorary doctorate .

Cardinal Terrazas Sandoval was a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . After the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. he participated in the 2013 conclave .

On May 25, 2013 Pope Francis accepted Julio Terrazas Sandoval's resignation due to reasons of age.

Julio Terrazas died on December 9th, 2015 after a long and serious illness. Two days later he was buried in Santa Cruz with great sympathy. In his mourning address, Archbishop Sergio Alfredo Gualberti paid tribute to the deceased as an “advocate for the poor”, who stood up for justice and for the dignity of every human being and opposed corruption and drug trafficking as well as a social development with authoritarian structures. Gualberti also mentioned the partnership between the church in Bolivia and the dioceses of Hildesheim and Trier , which Julio Terrazas had further developed.
