William John Cardinal Conway (born January 22, 1913 in Belfast , Northern Ireland , † April 17, 1977 in Armagh , Northern Ireland) was Archbishop of Armagh .

Life

William Conway studied in Belfast, Maynooth (County Kildare) and Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received on 20 June 1937, the sacrament of the priesthood and, after further studies in 1940 as a lecturer in the formation of priests.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on May 31, 1958 Titular Bishop of Neve and Auxiliary Bishop in Armagh. The episcopal ordination donated him on July 27, 1958 John Cardinal D'Alton ; Co- consecrators were Neil Farren , Bishop of Derry , and William MacNeely , Bishop of Raphoe .

William Conway participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . On September 10, 1963, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh. Pope Paul VI took him on February 22, 1965 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Patrizio in the college of cardinals .

He died on April 17, 1977 in Armagh and was buried on the site of the cathedral there.
