John Francis Cardinal D'Alton (born October 11, 1882 in Claremorris , Ireland , † February 1, 1963 in Dublin ) was Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland.

Life

After years of study in Dublin, Rome , Oxford and Cambridge, John D'Alton received the sacrament of ordination on April 18, 1908 and worked from 1910 to 1942 as a lecturer at the seminary of Maynooth ( County Kildare ), which he also directed as Regens from 1936 . From 1912 to 1924 he was also Vice Chancellor of the National University in Dublin. In 1938 Pope Pius XI awarded him . the honorary title of House Prelate to His Holiness. John D'Alton became known beyond the national borders of Ireland as the author of the plan named after him to bring about the political unity of his country.

In 1942 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the titular bishop of Binda and Coadjutor Bishop of Meath and one year later the Bishop of Meath. In 1946 he was then Archbishop of Armagh and on January 12, 1953 Pius XII took him. as Cardinal Priest with the pro hac vice to the title Church collected title deaconry Sant'Agata dei Goti in the Cardinal College on. In 1962 he took part in the first session of the Second Vatican Council . He died in Dublin on February 1, 1963 and was buried on the grounds of the Metropolitan Basilica of Armagh.
