Enrique Cardinal Reig y Casanova (born January 20, 1858 in Valencia , Spain , † August 20, 1927 in Toledo ) was Archbishop of Valencia and Toledo .

Life

Enrique Reig y Casanova received the sacrament of ordination in 1886 after studying Catholic theology at the seminary of Valencia . He then worked as a pastor in the diocese of Almería , taught at the seminary there and temporarily held the office of vicar general .

In 1901 he was appointed cathedral canon and archdeacon (vicar general) of the Archdiocese of Toledo. In 1903 he was appointed Apostolic Protonotary , a year later he became auditor at the Ecclesiastical Court of Madrid and rector of the university.

On May 28, 1914, he was appointed Bishop of Barcelona . He received the episcopal ordination on November 8, 1914 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and later Cardinal , Francesco Ragonesi . Co- consecrators were José María Salvador y Barrera , Bishop of Madrid and Jaime Cardona y Tur , Titular Bishop of Sion and Spanish Military Bishop . In 1920 he became Archbishop of Valencia and two years later Archbishop of Toledo. Pope Pius XI took him on December 11, 1922 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio in the college of cardinals .

Enrique Reig y Casanova died on August 20, 1927 and was buried in Toledo Cathedral.
