Enrique Cardinal Almaraz y Santos (born September 22, 1847 in La Vellés , † January 22, 1922 in Madrid ) was Archbishop of Seville , later Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain and an honorary citizen of Seville, Palencias and Puerto de Santa Marías .

Life

He studied at the Central Seminary in Salamanca , which gave him a doctorate in theology in 1876 and a licentiate in canon law . In 1874 he received the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salamanca , the priesthood and was doing pastoral work. He was a member of the faculty of the Salamanca seminary and in 1874 was cathedral choirmaster . During this time he was appointed papal chamberlain . He moved to Madrid, where he became preacher in the royal chamber at the king's court. He served as secretary to the Bishop of Madrid and was a member of the faculty of the Madrid Seminary. In April 1886 he was elected vicar general and in 1891 archpriest and dean of the cathedral chapter of Madrid.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on January 18, 1893 Bishop of Palencia . The archbishop of Valencia , Ciriaco María Sancha y Hervás Cardinal , gave him April 16 of that year in the church Colegiata de San Isidro , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were José María Cos y Macho , Archbishop ad personam of Madrid , and Jaime Cardona y Tur , Military Vicar General of Spain . As Bishop of Palencia, he was instrumental in maintaining and restoring the church of San Martín in Frómista , which was part of his diocese, which is not entirely undisputed today . She is one of the most important Romanesque churches in Spain and today as part of the Camino de Santiago part of the world heritage of UNESCO .

He was Senator of the Kingdom of Spain from 1899 to 1902. On April 18, 1907, he was promoted to Metropolitan of Seville . He was re-elected as Senator of the Kingdom of Spain in November 1907 and remained in office until his death.

Pope Pius X accepted him on November 27, 1911 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and he received the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio on December 2 of the same year . He participated in the 1914 conclave that Benedict XV. chose. On December 16, 1920 he was appointed Archbishop of Toledo . He was buried in the Cathedral of Toledo .
